Madan Lokur appointed as President of UN’s International Court of Justice
Former Supreme Court judge Justice Madan B Lokur has been appointed as the new chairman of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Justice Madan B Lokur, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India, has been appointed as the chairman of the UN’s International Court of Justice, which comprises retired Supreme Court judges and eminent jurists.
He is the first Indian judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court of another country.
The main organs of the United Nations are established: the General Assembly, a Security Council, an Economic and Social Council, a Board of Trustees, an International Court of Justice and a Secretariat.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
It was established by the United Nations Charter in June 1945.
55th Meeting of the GST Council
The 55th GST Council meeting, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, was held in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
The GST Council made several recommendations to the government, including reducing the GST rate on fortified rice seeds to 5 per cent.
Rice enriched rice is prepared by mixing enriched rice seeds and regular rice.
Rice is rich in B-complex vitamins, iron and folic acid.
The GST Council had recommended that the compensation cess be reduced to 0.1 per cent for goods supplied to commercial exporters.
The GST Council has decided to set up a committee of ministers from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal and other states to examine the implementation of 1 per cent indirect tax on certain goods and services.
It has been decided to help the states through this cess during natural disasters.
The 54th GST Council meeting was held in New Delhi in September.
The GST Council has constituted a 13-member Group of Ministers (GoM), headed by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, to thoroughly examine issues related to GST on life and medical insurance.
India’s forest cover increased by 1,445 sq km: Govt
India’s forest and tree cover has increased by 1,445 sq km between 2021 and 2023.
The Forest Survey of India (FSI) has been calculating forest cover since 1987 and tree cover since 2001.
As per the India Forest Report 2023, forest and tree cover has reached 25.17 percent of the total geographical area of the country.
As part of the climate plans to meet the Paris Agreement targets, the country has committed to achieve the capacity to absorb an additional 250-300 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions through forest cover expansion by 2030.
It covers 21.76 per cent of the total geographical area of the country.
According to the National Forest Policy of 1988, 33% of India’s geographical area should be under forest or trees.
Madhya Pradesh is at the top in terms of combined forest and tree cover in the country followed by Arunachal Pradesh and Maharashtra.
In terms of forest cover, Madhya Pradesh tops the list, followed by Arunachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
When it comes to forest cover relative to geographical area, Lakshadweep tops the list, followed by Mizoram and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Over the last decade, the forest cover in the Western Ghats and Eastern States as a whole has declined.

The United Nations has declared December 21 as World Meditation Day.
The first World Meditation Day was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
On December 7, the United Nations General Assembly declared December 21 as World Meditation Day.
December 22 is celebrated as National Mathematics Day
National Mathematics Day is celebrated on 22 December.
National Mathematics Day was declared by the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan
