3-nation tour: President

  • President Droupadi Murmu was on an official visit to 3 countries namely Fiji, New Zealand and Timor-Leste.
  • The President met President Ramos-Horta and discussed strengthening bilateral relations with Timor-Leste.
  • Droupadi Murmu was awarded the Grand Collar of Timor-Leste, the highest award of Timor-Leste.
  • He visited Fiji and held consultations with the country’s President Wiliame Maivalili katonivere and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
  • President Droupadi Murmu was awarded the highest award of Fiji, the Companion of the Order of Fiji’.
  • Droupadi Murmu, who traveled to New Zealand, met with the country’s Governor General Cindy Kiro, Prime Minister Luxon and Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters.

Paris Olympics close: USA tops

  • The 33rd Summer Olympic Games in Paris, capital of France, have come to an end.
  • The 10m air rifle mixed team division was held as the first medal sport in shooting.
  • In the final women’s basketball game on the final day of the tournament, the USA beat France to win gold.
  • For the first time in Olympic history, the teams’ parade during the opening ceremony was carried out on boats on the River Seine in Paris.
  • Antique iron shards of the Eiffel Tower were inlaid into medallions.
  • India finished the Paris Olympics with 6 medals including 1 silver and 5 bronze.
  • 2020 – Won 7 medals in Tokyo Olympics – 1 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze.
  • Neeraj Chopra won silver, becoming the first Indian to win two consecutive medals in Olympic athletics.
  • Shooter Manu Pak won 2 bronze medals in the individual event and mixed team event with Sarabjot Singh.
  • Manu Pak became the first Indian athlete in Olympic history to win a medal in shooting and the first Indian to win two medals in the same Olympics.
  • Aman Sehrawat won bronze in women’s wrestling.

“You are your own king” Scheme:

  • You Are Your Own King” project aims to empower the youth in Tamil Nadu through revitalization of traditional arts, skill development and employment opportunities.
  • Implemented by Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation on December 01, 2023 under the leadership of Minister Udayanidhi.
  • It focuses on preserving and promoting the endangered traditional arts and crafts of Tamil Nadu.
  • Encouraging young people interested in the arts to become entrepreneurs in their respective crafts.
  • Provides specialized training in various traditional arts including woodwork, Thanjavur puppets and painting, palm leaf art, sea shell art, clay and paper art, ceramics, handloom dyeing, Pattamadai mat making and many more.
  • Provides placement orders and job opportunities to trained youth, fosters economic independence and stability.

August 12: World Elephant Day

  • Every year 12th August is celebrated as World Elephant Day.
  • ‘World Elephant Day’ is celebrated to raise awareness about the importance of elephants in environmental protection, the plight of African and Asian elephants and to promote solutions for the protection of elephants internationally.

August 12: International Youth Day

  • International Youth Day is observed to honour the role of youth in conflict prevention and transformation, inclusiveness, social justice and sustainable peace.
  • In 1999, the UN August 12 was chosen as International Youth Day by the General Assembly.

Important Facts:

  1. The Maldives Roads and Drainage Management Project is being implemented with Indian funding and India has contributed Rs 560 crore for this project.
  2. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar participated in the inauguration ceremony of the Attu City Coastal Rehabilitation Project in Maldives and the Alternate Link Four-Lane Road constructed with the financing of the Export-Import Bank of India.
  3. Syed Refaat sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Bangladesh Supreme Court.
  4. Taiwan’s Lin Yu Ding defeated Poland’s Julia Srzemeta to win the gold medal in the women’s 57kg boxing category.
