Mullaperiyar dam issue

  • The Government of India enacted the Dam Safety Act, 2021 to protect the 130-year-old dam.
  • The Mullaperiyar Dam is a dam built on the Periyar River, which originates in the Western Ghats and flows westward into Kerala.
  • It is located on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border.
  • The land is owned by Kerala and maintained by the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department.
  • It was built by Benny Quick in 1893.
  • In the catchment area of this dam is the forest sanctuary Thekkady, downstream of which is the Idukki dam.
  • It was originally called Periyar Dam as it was built across the Periyar river.
  • Mullaiperiyar Dam is named after the confluence of two rivers Mullaiperiyar and Periyar.
  • The Periyar River originates in the Western Ghats and flows westward into the Arabian Sea.

ISRO’s plans:

  • V .Narayanan has been appointed as the 11th Chairman of ISRO.
  • ISRO is India’s premier space agency.
  • Headquartered in Bangalore, ISRO was established in 1969.
  • ISRO is the sixth largest space agency in the world.
  • India’s first satellite Aryabhata was launched by the Soviet Union on April 19, 1975.
  • The launch of the US commercial satellite with ISRO’s Mach 3 launcher and the integration of the rocket into the Gaganyaan project is currently underway in Sriharikota.
  • Chandrayaan 3 was India’s first attempt to land a spacecraft on the Moon’s South Pole.
  • Chandrayaan 4 will try to collect minerals from the moon.
  • Gaganyaan is one of the most ambitious projects of ISRO.
  • The rocket launch is being carried out successfully as part of the programme.
  • The launch of rocket NVS – 02 is underway at Sriharikota.

Appointment of Commissioners:

  • “The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned the hearing on the issue of appointment of election commissioners to February 4, saying” “it has to be decided whether the court order is superior or the law is superior.” “”
  • Last year, several petitions were filed in the Supreme Court seeking a collegium-like system to appoint the chief election commissioner and election commissioners of India.
  • So far, no law has been passed to appoint election commissioners.
  • Until such enactment, the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners shall be appointed by the President.
  • Besides the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India are members of the committee.
  • If the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha falls vacant, the leader of the party with the largest number of seats in the opposition will be part of the committee.

9th January: Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is observed every year on January 9, to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community towards the development of India.
  • The day also commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai on January 9, 1915.
