Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award for Overseas Indians

  • The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has released the list of Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awardees for this year.
  • The awards will be presented by the President of India, Shri Droupadi Mumu at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan to be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha from 8th to 10th February, 2018.
  • Member of British Parliament Usha Kumari Prashar, Physician Shamila Ford (USA), Professor Ajay Rane (Australia), Physician Marialina John Fontes (Austria), Jagannath Shekh Asthana (Romania) along with two organizations Hindustani Samaj (Russia) and Saraswati Vidya Niketan (Guyana) have been awarded for social service.

Scarab Typhus:

  • According to the Public Health Department, more than 5,000 people in Tamil Nadu have been affected by a bacterial infection called ‘Scarab Typhus’ in the last year.
  • Scarab Typhus occurs when bacteria called rickettsiae, which are parasites, insects and organisms that infect humans, bite them.
  • Symptoms include fever, headache, body aches and fatigue.

January 4: World Braille Day.

  • World Braille Day is celebrated on January 4 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the inventor of Braille.
  • The day celebrates awareness of the importance of Braille, a communication tool that helps the blind and visually impaired to fully realize their human rights.

  • The human methanomavirus (HMPV) is the most common cold-causing virus in China.
  • The study found that 58 species of butterflies, including rare ones, live in the Chaturagiri hills in Madurai district.
  • The first Jallikattu event in Tamil Nadu was held at Thatchankurichi in Pudukottai district.
