2 frigates’ Surat ‘,’ Nilgiri ‘, one submarine commissioned into Navy:
- Two warships, Surat and Nilgiri, and a submarine, Vakhshir, will be commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 15.
- Two warships and a submarine have been built at the Mazagon Shipyard in Mumbai.
- Helicopters like Chetak, ALH and Sea King can be operated from the Nilgiri and Surat warships.
- The ship also has accommodation facilities for women officers and sailors.
- The Scorpene-class submarine ‘Vakhshir’ is a multi-role diesel-electric submarine.
- The submarine will be used for surveillance, anti-submarine warfare and intelligence gathering.
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana:
- The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval for extension of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (REFSI) by one more year till 2025-2026.
- A Fund for Innovation and Technology (FIAT) with a corpus of Rs. 824.77 crore has been approved to fund technological initiatives in the implementation of these schemes.
- Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana is the country’s largest crop insurance scheme.
- The scheme is being implemented in 23 States and Union Territories.
- The technology based yield estimation system is being implemented in 9 States including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
- Cabinet approves additional subsidy of Rs 3,850 crore for Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) fertilizer
The book ‘Through the Ages’:
- The book was released by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
- The book is divided into seven sections covering more than 3,000 years of history of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
- The book is a joint effort of the National Book Trust of India and the Indian Council of Historical Research and is available in both Hindi and English.
158 Urban and Rural areas to be merged with 16 Municipal Corporations: Tamil Nadu Government
- The state government has decided to merge 158 urban and rural areas with 16 municipal corporations in Tamil Nadu.
- Six new Municipal Corporations and 28 Municipalities were formed in Tamil Nadu in 2021.
- On August 10 last year, the state government formed four municipal corporations – Tiruvannamalai, Namakkal, Karaikudi and Pudukottai.
- The Tamil Nadu government has also decided to upgrade the town panchayats of Mamallapuram, Sriperumbudur and Tiruvaiyaru to municipalities.
- The Government of Tamil Nadu has decided to merge 4 Municipalities, 5 Town Panchayats and 149 Village Panchayats with 16 Corporations including Greater Chennai Corporation, Madurai and Trichy.
