Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passes away
- Dr. Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in the village of Gah, West Punjab, in the Punjab province of India.
- In 1971, Dr. Manmohan Singh became the Economic Adviser in the then Ministry of External Trade.
- He served as Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance, Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Member Secretary in the Planning Commission, and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 1982 to 1985.
- He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan (1987), India’s second-highest civilian award, and the Adam Smith Prize of the University of Cambridge.
- Dr. Manmohan Singh served as the Finance Minister of India from 1991 to 1996.
- He introduced a number of structural reforms that liberalized India’s economy.
- His role in formulating a comprehensive policy for economic reforms has been recognized.
- In 1991, when India was facing a severe economic crisis, the newly elected Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao inducted a non-politician, Manmohan Singh, into his cabinet as Finance Minister.
- His cabinet passed several important legislations and schemes, including the National Rural Health Mission, Unique Identification Authority, Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, and the Right to Information Act.
- He served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014.
- Dr. Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister of India on 22 May 2004.
- He served as Prime Minister from May 2009 to May 2014.
- He has never been a member of the Lok Sabha, but served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, representing Assam from 1991 to 2019 and Rajasthan from 2019 to 2024.
Election Grants:

- The electoral bonds scheme, introduced by the central government in 2018, eased restrictions on political parties receiving funds.
- The government has amended the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the Companies Act, 2013, the Income Tax Act, 1961 and the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 2010.
- Electoral bonds can be obtained only through a bank account in a bank recognized by the Central Government.
- The State Bank of India (SBI) issues electoral bonds.
- As per the scheme, any citizen of India can get an electoral bond from SBI and contribute between Rs 1,000 and Rs 10,000, Rs 1,00,000, Rs 10,00,000 and Rs 1 crore to political parties.
- The electoral bonds do not mention who is giving the money and which party is being funded.
Decision to increase the number of tigers:
- The 15 tigers from Madhya Pradesh will be sent to Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
- The central government has approved this move with a view to increasing the number of tigers in those states.
- The tigers will be translocated from Bandhavgarh, Pench and Kangra national parks in Madhya Pradesh.
- Madhya Pradesh has the highest number of 785 tigers in India.
- It is followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
The world’s largest dam across the river Brahmaputra:
- China has said that the world’s largest dam being built on the Brahmaputra river will not affect India.
- Beijing: China has decided to build the world’s largest dam across the Brahmaputra river in Tibet at a cost of over 1 trillion yuan.
- The dam is to be built on the Brahmaputra river, which flows through a large valley in the Himalayas, into Arunachal Pradesh and then into Bangladesh.
