2024 Lok Sabha elections

  • Six national parties, including the BJP and the Congress, secured 63.35 per cent of the total votes polled in the Lok Sabha elections.
  • A total of 47 recognised state parties, 690 registered or unrecognised parties, 6 national parties – BJP, Congress, BSP, CPI (M), AAP and National People’s Party – contested the Lok Sabha elections.
  • Of the 800 women candidates, Maharashtra has the highest number of 111, followed by Uttar Pradesh (80) and Tamil Nadu (77).
  • Of the 543 Lok Sabha seats in the country, 152 have no women candidates.
  • A total of 74 women have been elected to the 18th Lok Sabha.
  • Independents got 2.79 per cent votes.
  • NOTA has got 0.99 per cent votes, which is less than 1.06 per cent of 2019.
  • The general category candidates will have to deposit Rs 25,000, while the reserved category candidates will have to deposit Rs 12,500.
  • According to the electoral law, the deposit will not be refunded to the candidate who gets less than one-sixth of the total valid votes cast in the constituency.

Prime Minister’s National Children’s Award to 17 children

  • The President gave away Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (PMRBP) to 17 children.
  • Janani Narayanan, a student from Chennai, received the award.
  • The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, a national award, is given to children for exceptional achievements in the fields of art, culture, bravery, innovation, science and technology, social service, sports and environment.
  • The National Children’s Award is conferred annually by the President of India on December 26, which is celebrated as’ Veer Palakkar Diwas’ to commemorate the valour and bravery of the four sons of Sikh Guru Gobind Singh.
  • Two red panda bears from the Netherlands:
  • Two rare red panda bears from the Netherlands have been brought to the Darjeeling Forest Zoological Park in West Bengal.
  • The move is aimed at increasing the population of red pandas in the Darjeeling park.
  • There are already 19 red pandas.
  • Darjeeling Park was discovered because of the cold weather which is necessary for the red panda.
  • The first red pandas, one male and three female, were introduced in 1990.
  • This type of red panda is native to the region from the mountains of eastern Himachal Pradesh to southwestern China.

The world’s largest dam across the Brahmaputra:

  • China is building the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra river near the India-China border.
  • The dam is being built on the hills of the Brahmaputra river, which originates in Arunachal Pradesh and flows into the Bay of Bengal.
  • China has already invested heavily in the construction of the Three Gorges Dam and the Rs 12,500 crore Jamnimin Station project in Tibet.
  • Built at an investment of Rs 11 lakh crore, the dam is the world’s largest infrastructure project.

December 27 is the International Day for Epidemic Preparedness

  • The first International Pandemic Preparedness Day, held on 27 December 2020, was called upon by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate the importance of preventing, preparing for and partnering against pandemics.

  • A total of 15 tigers will be translocated from Madhya Pradesh to Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
