Disaster Fund Rs. 50 crores for Tamil Nadu:
- A high-level committee headed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah has proposed and approved Rs. 1,000 crores for landslide risk mitigation for 15 states including Tamil Nadu.
- Of this, Rs. 50 crores are allocated for Tamil Nadu.
- It is an apex body of the Government of India with the mandate to formulate policies for national disaster management.
- The NDMA was established by the Disaster Management Act enacted by the Government of India on 23 December 2005.
- The NDMA is responsible for formulating policies, guidelines and coordinating best practices with the State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMA’s).
- It is headed by the Prime Minister of India and can have up to nine other members.
Rapid Increase of Himalayan Glacial Lakes: NGT
- The National Green Tribunal has issued a notice to the Central Government seeking its response on the recent increase in Himalayan glacial lakes, leading to natural disasters.
- The National Green Tribunal was established on October 18, 2010 under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010.
- Its objective is to effectively and expeditiously dispose of matters relating to environmental protection and forest conservation and to enforce legal rights.
- To provide relief and compensation for damages caused to individuals and property, including cases relating to the environment, including natural resources, and incidental medical issues.
- It is a specialized body with the necessary expertise to handle environmental disputes covering a wide range of issues.
Central Information Commission (CIC):
- The Supreme Court has urged the Central and State Governments to take steps to fill up the vacancies in the Central Information Commission (CIC) and the State Information Commissions.
- The CIC was constituted under the RTI Act, 2005 with effect from 12 October 2005.
- The CIC is headed by the Chief Information Commissioner and not more than ten Information Commissioners are appointed to assist the CIC. The Chief Information Commissioner holds office for a period of five years.
- The Chief Information Commissioner and the Information Commissioner shall hold office for such period as may be prescribed by the Central Government or till they attain the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
- They shall not be eligible for reappointment.
