Insurance Amendment Bill:

  • The central government has decided to pass the Insurance Act Amendment Bill in the budget session.
  • Through this, a target has been set to provide insurance to everyone in the country by 2047.
  • The budget session begins on July 22 and ends on August 12.
  • Insurance Act 1938 – some important amendments are made.
  • The law is going to be amended to allow a single company to carry various types of insurance such as life insurance, medical insurance and auto insurance.
  • Currently, life insurance companies cannot sell other types of insurance, including medical insurance.
  • The government’s target of universal coverage of the country by 2047 can be achieved.
  • At present there are 25 life insurance companies and 32 other general insurance companies operating in India.

Alimony for Muslim Women – Supreme Court Verdict:

  • The Supreme Court gave a landmark judgment that Muslim women can also claim alimony (maintenance) under Section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC).
  • The judgment stated that this section of the law applies to married women of all religions.

Shah Bhanu Case:

  • In 1985, the Supreme Court ruled that Muslim husbands should pay alimony to their wives after divorce.
  • The Muslim Women (Right to Protection from Divorce) Act, 1986 was enacted during the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s regime to give shape to this judgment.
  • This law was upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2001.
  • It also allowed Muslim women to have equal rights in marriage and divorce.

PM’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ Campaign:

  • On the occasion of World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative to plant 140 crore saplings across the country on June 5.
  • The ‘A tree in the name of mother’ initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a fitting response to the challenges of climate change.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the world record program of planting 11 lakh saplings in a single day in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

Breakfast Scheme in Government Aided Schools:

  • Chief Minister M. K. Stalin will launch the breakfast program on July 15 for students studying in 3,995 government-aided primary schools in Tamil Nadu.
  • The Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme was launched in the first phase on 15.9.2022 for the students of classes I to V in 1,545 government primary schools.
  • The scheme was expanded and launched by Chief Minister M.K.Stalin to benefit 30,992 government primary school students in Thirukkuvalai, the birthplace of former Chief Minister Karunanidhi.
  • The Chief Minister will inaugurate the breakfast program at St. Annal Government Aided Primary School in Geezachery village of Tiruvallur district on July 15, Kamaraj’s birthday.
  • 23 lakh students studying in 3,995 government-aided primary schools will benefit from this scheme.

Educational Development Day: 15th July

  • Tamil Nadu observes Kamarajar’s birthday on July 15 as ‘Kalvi Day’ or ‘Education Development Day’.
  • Since 2006, this day has been observed as Education Development Day.

World Youth Skills Day: 15 July

  • World Youth Skills Day 2024 is observed on 15 July.
  • The theme of this year’s event is: “Youth Skills for Peace and Development”.
